Bio-Electronics: From Soft Electronics to Neuronal Interfacing and Beyond

There is a growing interest in soft electroactive materials in many science and engineering research fields. Fundamental understanding of molecular effects on electrical, optical, and mechanical properties has enabled formulation of multifunctional materials with decent conductivity, desired chemical functionality, and tunable mechanical parameters. Furthermore, these smart materials have been successfully employed for device applications in flexible displays and organic photovoltaics and, more recently, biomedical research on controlled drug release, bio-actuators, and neural probes. In this seminar, I will deliver two ‘distinct’ research topics – soft electronics and neuronal interfaces. In the first part, I will present the previous results of my research on organic/hybrid electronics mainly focusing on synthesis of molecular semiconductors and ultrathin dielectrics and their application to flexible low-voltage thin-film transistors. In the second part, I will show the recent progress in my research on developing neuron-material interfaces with silicon-based nano/microscopic architectures and monitoring/controlling in-vitro neuronal network activity. Finally, I will suggest that the aforementioned research efforts can be merged and conducive to building a novel class of bio-electronic interfaces and introduce a research program targeting at soft nanostructure-based electronic materials and their biomedical applications.
