Supermassive Black Holes in Early Universe

Supermassive black holes are black holes with masses 10^5 – 10^10 times the mass of the Sun. They are identified in luminous quasars even when the universe was only 1 Gyr old (less than 10% of the current age).
Growing such supermassive black holes is not a trivial task, however.
In order to understand the growth history of the supermassive black holes in quasars, we have been carrying out the study of high redshift quasars using the space infrared telescope, AKARI, and the ground-based telescopes. Our results show that the most distant supermassive black holes identified so far are vigorously growing. I also outline the recent progresses in the observational studies of astronomical objects in the very early universe and what we have learned so far.
